Kirk Triplett Wins SAS Championship

Holds off Lehman, Perry and Langer at Prestonwood Country Club

CARY, N.C. (OCTOBER  12, 2014) – Kirk Triplett (70-63-69=-14) claimed his second victory of the year and fourth of his Champions Tour career after winning the 2014 SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek. Triplett, who finished third in 2013, entered Sunday with a two-stroke lead after shooting a 9-under par 63 in the second round. With the win, Triplett earned 315 Charles Schwab Cup points moving up three places to No. 6 in the year-long points race and collected $315,000 in prize money.

“A few bogeys and had some bounce backs.  But, yeah, to win two tournaments in a year, I guess I always set out at the start of the year to win a tournament and then sometimes if it happens early, it doesn't happen that often,” said Triplett. “But if it happens early in the year, maybe I kind of lose track of what's going on.  It's kind of nice to win out here.”

Triplett had the shot of the week Saturday evening, after his 8 iron from 143 yards rolled into the bottom of the cup for an eagle on the 18 giving him a two-stroke lead to enter the final day. On Sunday, Triplett held off charges from Tom Lehman, who birdied 16 and eagled 17 en route to a runner up finish.

Former SAS Champions Bernhard Langer (2012) and Kenny Perry (2011) also made runs at the leader but no one would come within two strokes of Triplett on Sunday. Langer and Perry finished tied for third at 10 under with Langer carding a 68 while Perry birdied five of the six final holes to turn in a 67. Langer extended his Charles Schwab Cup points lead by finishing the final two rounds without a bogey at Prestonwood Country Club.

“I think all you have to do is look at the field and that usually tells you what the players think of the tournament,” Triplett said. “Sometimes players have conflicts and can't make it to events, but I think most guys put this one on their schedule pretty early.  The golf course is very nice, always in good shape.”
