CARY, N.C. (AUGUST 27, 2014) – Today, tournament officials announced the commitments of Sir Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie to play in the SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek, the annual Champions Tour event taking place Oct. 6-12 at Prestonwood Country Club.

“We are thrilled to have World Golf Hall of Fame members, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie returning to Cary this year for the SAS Championship,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “The addition of these two players will ensure even tougher competition in October. Montgomerie and former SAS Champion Bernhard Langer have been leading the Charles Schwab Cup standings all season and you can never count out a six-time major winner as a contender.”

A three-time Masters Champion (1989, 1990, 1996) and three-time Open Championship (1987, 1990, 1992) winner, Faldo made his domestic Champions Tour debut at last year’s SAS Championship. He’s collected 41 professional wins between the PGA TOUR and European Tour and competed at the Greenbrier Classic, RBC Heritage and The Open Championship earlier this year.

Montgomerie claimed his first and second career major victories this year, winning both the Senior PGA Championship and the U.S. Senior Open Championship in his first appearances at both events. He also posted a runner up finish at this year’s Senior Open Championship to Langer, who ran away with the event winning by a record 13-strokes. Montgomerie’s strong play in 2014 has put him in chase for the Charles Schwab Cup, he is currently second behind Langer with nearly a 1500 point lead over another SAS Champion, Kenny Perry, who sits at third.

Bernhard Langer Leads List of Former Champions in SAS Championship Field

Five-time winner leads Official Money List and Charles Schwab Cup points race

CARY, N.C. (AUGUST 20, 2014) – World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer leads the field of former champions committed to the SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek, the official Champions Tour event taking place at Prestonwood Country Club, Oct. 6 -12.

Langer, a five-time winner through 16 events, will look to add to his remarkable 2014 season against two-time SAS champion Russ Cochran (2013 & 2010),  Kenny Perry (2011), Tom Pernice, Jr. (2009), Mark Wiebe (2007), Hale Irwin (2005), Craig Stadler (2004), and D.A. Weibring (2003).

“Our field looks very strong so far, especially with commitments from Langer, Perry and Pernice Jr., who have all won this year,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber.  “The way Bernhard is playing right now is incredible. He’s always done well at Prestonwood and if his form continues over the next few weeks, we could be seeing our third repeat champion at this year’s SAS Championship.”

Following a top-10 finish at this year’s Masters Tournament, Langer went on to capture two senior major titles, winning the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship in June and The Senior Open Championship in July with a 13-stroke margin of victory, the largest in event history. Langer’s performance equaled the second-largest in Major Championship history, regular or senior. Tiger Woods won the US Open Championship by 15 in 2000 and Old Tom Morris won The Open Championship by 13 in 1862.

Langer currently leads the Official Money List and Charles Schwab Cup points race, after earning his 23rd Champions Tour career victory last weekend at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. Langer carded three rounds without a single bogey, finishing at 16-under par and a one stroke victory over Woody Austin and Mark O'Meara.

Of the 16 events this season, eight have been won by SAS Champions. Perry won the first senior major of the year, the Regions Tradition in May, and held off Langer at the 3M Championship last month for his seventh career victory on the Champions Tour. Pernice Jr. earned his third Champions Tour victory after winning the Principal Charity Classic in May.

To date, this group of past champions have collected over 100 wins on the Champions Tour and eight titles this season. Irwin leads the pack with an impressive 45 victories in his Champions Tour career, while Langer moves into a tie for 5th place with 23 career wins on the overall list.

PGA Championship Perfect Send-Off for Kenny Perry

Perry and Defending Champion Russ Cochran Commit to SAS Championship

CARY, N.C. (AUGUST 6, 2014) – This week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., will be a celebration for former SAS Championship Winner Kenny

Perry. Tournament officials are pleased to announce that Perry and fellow Kentucky native and defending SAS Championship winner, Russ Cochran, have both committed to the Official Champions Tour event taking place Oct. 10 – 12 at Prestonwood Country Club.

“Anytime you have a former champion competing in a major tournament it is a big deal and we wish Kenny all the best this week at a place that has meant so much to him,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “To see players like him at the majors is a testament to the level of talent that competes every week on the Champions Tour and it will be a pleasure to welcome Kenny and Russ back to Cary.”

After earning a special exemption from the PGA of America into the field this week, Perry returns to the site of his best major finish.  In 1996, he lost to Mark Brooks in a playoff, the first time the PGA Championship was played at Valhalla Golf Club.

“To me, this is it (Valhalla Golf Club), I’ve got way too many memories here. This place is probably number one in my heart,” said Perry. “It’s a tremendous place for me to be in my home state.  It’s one of those kinds of gifts, to be able to come back to Valhalla, to where it all kind of started for me. To be able to say goodbye, shake a lot of hands, and thank a lot of people.”

Perry has had a strong performance in the first half of the year, he claimed his third career Champions Tour major by winning the Regions Tradition in May. It was his third straight Champions Tour major following the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS and the U.S. Senior Open in 2013, the latter of which qualified him for the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. Perry finished tied for 28th, but hit one of the most memorable shots of the week, holing out for eagle on the 14th hole from 144 yards during the third round.

Last weekend, Perry captured his seventh career Champions Tour victory at the 3M Championship edging fellow SAS Champion Bernhard Langer.

While Cochran is not in the field at Valhalla, he will return to Cary in October to defend his 2013 SAS Championship title and try to become the first three-time winner in the event’s 14 year history having also won in 2010. Cochran currently has five Champions Tour victories, including one major, the 2011 Senior Open Championship.

“We’re have been thrilled that our volunteers have had the opportunity to attend the Wyndham Championship for the last few years as part of the benefits of being a volunteer,” Greater Hickory Kia Classic executive tournament director Jim Correll said.  “Now with the SAS Championship joining the arrangement, we have made volunteering at the Greater Hickory Kia Classic an even greater value.   We appreciate Mark Brazil at the Wyndham and Jeff Kleiber at the SAS Championship for making this possible, and we look forward to returning the favor when their volunteers can attend our event.”

“This arrangement is a fantastic added value for our SAS Championship volunteers,” SAS Championship tournament director Jeff Kleiber said.  “We all know professional golf tournaments aren’t possible without a huge contingent of volunteers, and I can’t think of a better way to thank them than provide opportunities for them to attend the Wyndham and the Greater Hickory Kia Classic as a fan so they can watch the tournaments and enjoy them.  We are very happy to join this partnership with two fantastic tournaments and look forward to telling our volunteers about this added benefit.”
