Charles Schwab Cup front-runner Bernhard Langer leads a list of former champions committed to the 2016 SAS Championship, presented by Bloomberg Media. The Championship, which takes place October 14 – 16 at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, will be host to Wildcard Weekend for the PGA Tour Champions in 2016, the last chance for players to qualify for the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.
Langer, who has secured three victories in 2016, including two majors, has 28 total victories on the PGA TOUR Champions in his career. He won the 2012 SAS Championship after shooting a final round 63 (-9) to win by two strokes over Jay Don Blake.
Langer is joined in the field by former SAS Champions Tom Lehman (2015), Kirk Triplett (2014), Russ Cochran (2013, 2010), Kenny Perry (2011), Tom Pernice (2009), Mark Wiebe (2007), and Tom Jenkins (2006).
“The field at the SAS Championship is as strong as ever, led by a large list of former champions,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “Bernhard Langer has once again set a high bar, and we look forward to the competition in Cary among former champions and fan favorites.”
Langer, who currently leads the Charles Schwab Cup money list, added the 2016 Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship and Regions Tradition to his major resume earlier this season. His total of seven senior major titles ties Hale Irwin for second place on the career list, a victory behind Jack Nicklaus.
Triplett joins Langer in the 2016 winner’s circle, following his victory at the inaugural American Family Insurance Championship in June. The victory in Wisconsin gave Triplett a total of five for his PGA TOUR Champions career.
Combined, the group of SAS champions has combined for over 100 victories, including 22 major championships, on the PGA TOUR Champions.
Tickets are available for the SAS Championship and can be purchased online at saschampionship.com or by calling 919-531-4653. A limited number of volunteer positions are also still available, to register visit saschampionship.com.
CARY, N.C. (July 18th, 2016) – Major Champion Tom Lehman will return to Cary for the 2016 SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg to defend his title. The event will take place October 14-16 at Prestonwood Country Club, and marks the first time the SAS Championship will play host to Wild Card Weekend, the last full-field event before the Charles Schwab Cup Playoff field is finalized.
Lehman finished the 2015 SAS Championship in dramatic fashion, holing a 12-foot putt from the fringe on the final hole. This concluded a birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie stretch to finish his final round of 65 to take the title (-12). Joe Durant finished one shot back at -11, and former SAS Champions Bernhard Langer (2012) and Kenny Perry (2011) finished T3 at -10
“Tom Lehman’s victory last year was one of the most memorable in Tournament history,” Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber said. “We’re glad to have him back to defend his title against a competitive field featuring World Golf Hall of Famers, major champions, and fan favorites for Wild Card Weekend.”
Lehman has collected five PGA TOUR victories throughout his career, including his victory at the Open Championship in 1996 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. He capped off the 1996 season as leading money winner, PGA TOUR Player of the year, and winner of both the Vardon Trophy (scoring average) and Byron Nelson Award (adjusted scoring average).
Since starting the Tour in 2009, Lehman has a total of nine PGA TOUR Champions victories, including three major titles. He won the Charles Schwab Cup in both 2011 and 2012, also earning PGA TOUR Champions Player of the Year honors both seasons, becoming the first professional golfer to win such honors on all three Tours operated by the PGA TOUR.
Lehman currently sits in 13th position of the Charles Schwab Cup with $601,674 in earnings this season. He has five top-10 finishes, including a 2nd place finish in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.

Featuring a catered lunch buffet, open bar, and afternoon hors d’oeuvres, daily passes will be available for each round of the tournament.
As an exclusive debut offer, daily hospitality passes are on sale this week only for $100 (normally $120). To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Tom Lehman’s (2015 SAS Champion) 1996 Open Championship victory, use the promo code ‘LEHMAN20’ for discounted tickets. Both individual passes and corporate ticket packages are available.
“We are excited for the opportunity to partner with the SAS Championship and to be a part of such a great event,” said Sidney Julich, Marketing Coordinator of Mellow Mushroom in Cary.
The Mellow Mushroom Chill Club will be located behind the 16th green on the Highlands golf course in 2016. This year the Tournament is being played exclusively on the Highlands golf course at Prestonwood, on brand new greens that will debut in the fall. The premier viewing location is at the green of a reachable par 5, where the Championship may be won or lost come Sunday.
“The addition of Mellow Mushroom as a SAS Championship partner is great for our tournament and our fans,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “We’re looking forward to an electric atmosphere and exciting play at the 16th Hole this year. This is a wonderful way to build on the community partnerships we’ve established here in Cary over the last 15 years.”
On-site VIP parking is also available for $100. Each purchaser will be able to park in the same lot as the PGA Tour Champions pros and have their name designated on official tournament signage. Daily tickets, valid for one day, are $20 and children 17 and under are admitted free courtesy of the News & Observer.
Giveaways for early volunteer sign-ups, PGA Tour Champions is #WhereLegendsPlay
CARY, N.C. (April 11, 2016) – With another legendary green jacket awarded to the latest Masters Champion, tournament officials for the SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg, announced the opening of volunteer registration and ticket sales for the PGA TOUR’s Champions event taking place at Prestonwood Country Club, Oct. 14 -16 in Cary.
“It’s become a tradition to launch volunteer registration and offer the lowest ticket prices all season to our fans to build on the excitement from The Masters,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “It means the professional tours are really starting to get into the heart of their schedules and the chase is on for those valuable playoff spots, especially on the PGA Tour Champions side where the inaugural Wild Card Weekend will take place at this year’s SAS Championship.”
Wild Card Weekend is a part of the new season-ending competition taking place during the final events of the 2016 season, which includes the inaugural Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs, a three-tournament competition to determine the Charles Schwab Cup Champion. Only the top 72 players on the official money list will make the playoffs and since the SAS Championship is the last full-field event of the season, it’s the players’ last chance to make a playoff push. A player outside the top 72 before the SAS Championship who finishes in the top 10 clinches a playoff spot.
The field of 72 players will then compete at PowerShares QQQ Championship in Thousand Oaks, CA. Following that event, 54 players will then move on to the Dominion Charity Classic in Richmond, VA based on official money earned. Finally, 36 players will advance to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship being held in Scottsdale, AZ to determine the Charles Schwab Cup Champion.
Additionally, tournament officials announced several monthly giveaways for early volunteer registrations. Beginning today, any new registration will be automatically entered to win exclusive prizes. For example, the VIP Volunteer Package will include clubhouse dining and clubhouse parking. Over 700 volunteers are needed for Oct. 10 – 16 and there are a number of different committees available; golf knowledge is a plus but not required.
“I always say one of the biggest strengths of the SAS Championship is the group of volunteers we have supporting us,” said Kleiber. “It’s because of this great group we’ve been able to deliver a player’s favorite event each year and continue to enhance the on-site experience for our fans.”
The discounted volunteer fee of $45 is available through May 31 and each registration includes a Nike tournament golf shirt, hat or visor, meals on scheduled days, two weekly tickets, and an invitation (including a guest) to the Volunteer Appreciation Party. A free round of golf at Prestonwood Country Club will also be made available for volunteers who work three shifts or more (date restrictions do apply).
Starting today, fans can enjoy the Month of the Masters Ticket Special which will run through April 30. On-site VIP parking is available for $75 (25% discount), each purchaser will be able to park in the same lot as the pros and have their name designated on official tournament signage. Daily tickets, valid one day, are $10 (50% discount) and children 17 and under are admitted free courtesy of the News & Observer with a ticketed adult. Later this month, an exclusive Eagles’ Nest offer will be made available for the premium hospitality suite.
CARY, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2016) – The 2016 PGA TOUR Champions season and the debut of the season-long chase for the Charles Schwab Cup has begun at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii and to mark the milestone, officials from the SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg unveiled the new tournament logo which will be used in promotion of the event taking place Oct. 14 – 16 at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary. This year’s event marks the first in which the SAS Championship will play host to Wild Card Weekend, the last full-field event before the Charles Schwab Cup Playoff field is finalized.
“We’re excited that we’re the last full field event, which means we’ll have the top players and still draw the legends of the game and fan favorites,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “The competitive drama the playoffs will generate will draw national interest and the PGA TOUR will certainly be elevating their promotional efforts for the season’s grand finale. Ultimately it makes our weekend one to watch as we set the stage for the playoffs.”
A full-field of 81 players will compete for the largest purse of the final four events in the season at $2.1 million. After SAS, the top 72 players on the official money list qualify for the first playoff event. Should a player come to SAS outside of the top 72 and finish in the top 10 at Prestonwood, he would then qualify for the PowerShares QQQ Championship.
After the first playoff event, the field will be cut to 54 players who will compete at the Dominion Charity Classic Nov. 4 – 6 in Richmond, Va. Nov. 4 – 6. Following Richmond, 36 players will move on to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Scottsdale, Ariz. Nov. 11 – 13.
“It’s an exciting time for the Tour, the partnership with Charles Schwab is the longest in PGA TOUR history. In addition to the 20-year commitment from Schwab there were a number of tournament renewals, plus the addition of three new events and two new title sponsors for current events,” said Kleiber. “This is great growth and incredible stability, overall it means the Tour is in a strong, healthy place.”
Additionally, tournament officials announced that an alternate course will be used while course renovations take place at Prestonwood Country Club. The greens on the Highlands will be resurfaced this summer with Champions Bermuda. The event had previously played a hybrid course using holes from both the Highlands and the Meadows courses, however this year’s tournament will play all 18 holes of the Highlands with brand new greens in October.
Tickets for the 2016 SAS Championship will go on-sale during The Masters which begin Thursday, April 7.
CARY, N.C. (OCT. 11, 2015) – After one of the greatest finishes in tournament history, Tom Lehman (68-71-65=204) claimed his first SAS Championship title Sunday afternoon. The win marks Lehman’s first victory of 2015, and the ninth of his Champions Tour career. After finishing in second place last year, Lehman entered Sunday three strokes off of the lead. With the win, Lehman earned 315 Charles Schwab Cup points, moving up four places to No. 10 in the year-long points race and collected $315,000 in prize money.
“I've had a couple seconds and I've had some other good top finishes, but no wins. So it's just nice to get back in the winner's circle. It's nice to see the putts drop when you need them most,” said Lehman. “It's nice to do it in a place like this with such a great golf course and such a wonderful tournament, great sponsor and great fans. Just a really top, top, top caliber golf tournament. So it's nice to win this one.”
Lehman finished his third round with one of the top shots of the tournament, sinking a 12-foot putt from the fringe to extend his lead. Almost out of contention midway through the round, he finished birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie on the last four holes.
“Well, I knew that there was a lot of guys really bunched up and I knew that nobody was running away with it and I was, what, 7‑under from the 10th hole on, and just hit good shots and nobody was really making any big move, so the game was still on,” said Lehman. “All three of us were trying to hit it close and trying to make birdies. We kind of fed off each other and I was fortunate that I made one more putt.”
Lehman becomes the thirteenth champion in the 15 year history of the SAS Championship, annually a favorite stop among the Champions Tour players. “Everywhere around the country has their own different flavor and the personality here is one of just incredible hospitality, get treated extremely well. The club is a great golf club and the staff is amazing the way they treat the players, roll out the red carpet. On top of that, the volunteers, I mean, the fans, everybody is willing and wanting to help make the stay here a good one.”
Joe Durant and former SAS Champions, Bernhard Langer (2012) and Kenny Perry (2011), all finished within three strokes of the lead. Langer and Perry finished tied for third at 10 under; their exact same result in 2014. Colin Montgomerie’s 8-under tournament performance gives him the outright lead in the 2015 Charles Schwab Cup standings.
