Official Champions Tour event scheduled through 2017
CARY, N.C. (SEPTEMBER 29, 2014) – The SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Businessweek announced today that the YMCA of the Triangle is the host charity for the annual Champions Tour event held at Prestonwood Country Club. Additionally, it was announced that the contract with the Champions Tour has been extended through 2017. This year’s tournament returns to Cary, Oct. 10 – 12, and will culminate with a donation to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, We Build People. Funds will be directed to the standardized Y Learning program which serves students in grades K-8 who struggle to reach school system benchmarks.
“Through our partnership with SAS and the SAS Championship, we’re able to help bridge the education gap in our community,” said Bruce Ham, Chief Development Officer at the YMCA of the Triangle. “At the Y, we want every child – regardless of their ability to pay – to have the opportunity to succeed in the classroom and beyond.”
“The vision that the YMCA of the Triangle has for our community is fantastic, and it makes perfect sense that SAS and the SAS Championship are partnering with them to expand their efforts,” said Ann Goodnight, Director of Community Relations for SAS. “Their Y Learning program is full of passionate people focused on improving the future of our community.”
More than 1,200 children in Wake, Durham, Johnston, Lee and Pamlico Counties receive homework assistance and academic enrichment through Y Learning. Y Learning is fully funded through community support and donations to the YMCA’s Annual We Build People Campaign. Since 2010, proceeds from the SAS Championship have benefited Y Learning. In fact, nearly 20 percent of the students in the program are able to participate due to the SAS Championship donation.
“The SAS Championship has become a Triangle sports tradition that connects local charities and Champions Tour golf,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “We look forward to continuing our strong partnerships with SAS and the YMCA of the Triangle to further engage the community and serve students in our area.”
As host organization, the YMCA contracts with the Champions Tour to host the SAS Championship and benefits from event proceeds. During the first 13 years of the SAS Championship, over $3 million has been donated to support children’s educational organizations.
The SAS Championship continues to be one of the strongest events of the Champions Tour season, annually attracting the legends of golf as competitors for one the largest purses all year at $2.1 million. Past winners include World Golf Hall of Fame members Bernhard Langer and Hale Irwin and more recently, Kenny Perry and Russ Cochran. The Champions Tour event will continue to be held at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary through 2017.
