Past Champions Commit to SAS Championship

CARY, N.C. (SEPTEMBER 4, 2012) – Tournament officials for the SAS Championship presented by Bloomberg Business are pleased to announce six more former champions to the 2012 field. D.A. Weibring (2003), Craig Stadler (2004), Hale Irwin (2005), Tom Jenkins (2006), Mark Wiebe (2007), Tom Pernice, Jr. (2009) and Russ Cochran (2010) will join already-announced 2011 champion Kenny Perry at Prestonwood Country Club, Oct. 5 – 7 in Cary, NC.

“We are excited to have these skilled champions back to compete,” said Tournament Director Jeff Kleiber. “The tournament is an important part of the Champions Tour and consistently draws a high caliber of players. Having our past champions return to Prestonwood is exciting for the fans and the Triangle area.”

Kenny Perry will be looking to defend his SAS Championship title and keep his strong 2012 season going. With one Champions Tour victory at The ACE Group Classic in February and seven top 10 finishes, Perry will be a strong contender to compete for back-to-back titles.

When Russ Cochran won in 2010, he cruised to a two-stroke victory over Pernice, Jr., winning for the second time in as many weeks.  Since the 2010 SAS Championship, Cochran won his first major at the 2011 Senior Open Championship. This year on the Tour, Cochran has five top 10 finishes, with his highest finish third at the Montreal Championship in June.

Other notable champions include Hale Irwin, Mark Wiebe and Tom Pernice, Jr. Irwin, who is the Champions Tour wins leader and career money leader. Irwin is still in search of his first victory this year, with one third place finish and three in the top 10. His SAS Championship victory in 2005 was a close one, sinking an eagle on the 17th hole to win by two strokes.

Wiebe became the 12th player to win in his Champions Tour debut at the SAS Championship in 2007.  Since then, he has two other Champions Tour victories and has three top ten finishes in 2012. Like Wiebe, Pernice, Jr. also won in his Champions Tour debut in 2009, and with one top ten finish this year, he is searching for his first Champions Tour win since his 2009 victory at the SAS Championship.

Two-time champion Bruce Lietzke (2001, 2002) has been battling injuries since the 2011 season, and Eduardo Romero (2008) is currently on the alternate list. The final field will be set at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 30 and additional commitment announcements will be made in the coming weeks.
